DSS Systems and Software Technologies Ltd, who have an exclusive strategic alliance with SSAI, conducted a one-day workshop on “Six Sigma for Software, IT & ITeS – a specialized approach” at Hotel Le Meridian, Bangalore on Friday, 09th December 2005.

The workshop started at 10:00 am with an introduction to the concept of Six Sigma and its applications to the Software, IT & ITeS industry. This workshop highlighted the practical applicability of Six Sigma in addressing the core issues of these businesses, like creeping requirements, excessive schedule pressure, high level of rework for delivered modules, inadequate configuration management etc.

Ms. Medha Stephen, Director and CTO of DSS, addressed the participants, which included senior professionals from leading Software, IT, ITeS companies in Bangalore.

The workshop covered an overview of the DMAIC and DFSS/DMADV methodologies of Six Sigma with insights into how these methodologies can be integrated to reap maximum benefits in the software, IT processes. From her own personal experiences in implementing Six Sigma in various organizations, Ms. Stephen took the participants through various examples of its application in the Software, IT, ITeS industries. Team exercises helped the participants to gain vital insights.

Ms.Stephen highlighted that the focus of Six Sigma initiative is to reduce cost by minimizing defects and rework and thus increase the revenue through improved customer satisfaction. Consequently, an organization can achieve substantial financial benefits and improved understanding of requirements leading to robust design of new products/projects/processes giving rise to significant topline growth. She emphasized on her statement with practical examples of successful Six Sigma deployments in the industry.  The coexistence of Six Sigma and other process improvement initiatives or standards like ISO 9001-2000, CMMI, CMM, PSP, TSP, IEEE etc. were also addressed in the session.
